Trivia Night

Seven evenings in the autumn of 2013, and the question bank behind them.

Diamonds for right answers

6 September – 11 October 2013 · reconstructed from the chat logs

On 6 September 2013 VanDerProtofsky asked the server “say... who likes trivia?” and then ran quiz nights in public chat for the next five weeks. He set the questions, judged the answers, kept score, and paid the winners in diamonds. He also proposed it properly on the forums first, because that was how he did things.

The format was his own. You picked a category, he read a question, anyone could answer and there was no penalty for guessing. A right answer got a “ding!”. Three in a row earned a bonus. When someone was clearly winning he would offer to raise the stakes — best of five for a diamond block, then best of ten for four of them — and let them decide whether to take the prize or keep playing.

7nights
152questions asked
59players answering
377in his question bank
15categories

Reconstructed by reading the chat log itself: a numbered line from him starts a question, a “ding!” ends it, and the player named — or the last one to speak before it — gets the point. He used nicknames when awarding, so “WB”, “ueki” and “Timber” have been matched back to the people in the room. Scores here are counted the same way he counted them, and may differ by one or two from his running totals where he accepted an answer without saying so.

The questions came out of a file he had been building since 2012, a year before he ever joined this server. It is still on GitHub, and so is the little web app he wrote to run quizzes off a Kindle browser — which still works. He licensed the whole bank Creative Commons so anyone could use it, and wrote a file into the repository whose only purpose was to thank two people, Plappo Mintybits and McDragon, for helping him build it.

113 of the 152 questions asked on TWiTcraft have been matched back to this file. Questions and answers below are his, reproduced under CC BY-NC 3.0 from RoyCurtis/KindleTriviamaster. The right answer is marked.
