The Geocache

A chest hidden somewhere on the map, every month of 2013, and the logbooks that are still in them.

Go places, win prizes

June – October 2013, monthly · run by spkarrer, with caches hidden by SWfan85 and SkyerCorp

Every month for most of 2013, somebody hid a chest somewhere on the TWiTcraft map and left a book inside it. Find the chest, sign the book, and at the end of the month you were entered into a draw. There were riddles if you got stuck and coordinates if the riddles did not help, and from August there was an easy mode.

spkarrer ran it out of a red brick bunker on plot D12 and advertised it in chat in six words:

Go places, Win prizes! See the red brick bunker at D12 for more about the monthly GeoCache Challenge

He settled each month by grabbing whoever was standing nearby: “It's time for the geocache drawing. NWS, would you please select a number between 1 and 4?” Prizes were real — a saddle, gold horse armour, a fortune pick, a diamond block — and he kept a running conscience about the ones he had not handed over yet: “sheep! I owe you a geocache prize... from last month.”

The first month, nobody came. “I'm not getting many takers on the Geocache challenge,” he wrote on 27 June. By August the logbooks have eight or nine names in them.

The caches are still there

six logbooks, recovered from the archived worlds

Nobody emptied them. Six of the books are still sitting in their chests where they were left in 2013, with the rules on the first page and the signatures on the rest. Here they are, with the coordinates, so you can go and stand where they are.

July 2013 — −1256, 64, −2803

You have found the July challenge geocache! Put your name and the date below, then click “Done”

If you press “Sign,” it will not allow anyone else to edit the book, so don't do it! After putting your name and date below, put a junk item in the chest to the right. It is a donation chest, and you will not be able to take anything out. This is a backup way for me to logblock those who find the cache.

Signed by: SkyerCorp (July 2), x3fox (July 2), sheepinator_23 (July 3), NightWorldSky (July 3), Minion5051 (July 5), D4veroche (July 25)

August 2013 — found in a player's pocket

The August book is not in a chest. It was in minnersRus's inventory when the world was frozen, which means somebody took the logbook home.

Put your name and date below, along with some bragging if you did not have to use “easy mode”

After you put your name/date, press “Done” If you “Sign” no one else can edit! After you put the book back, place a junk item in the right “donation” chest. This helps me determine actual geocache visitors. If you want to leave something good, put it in the left chest.

September 2013 — 190, 64, 955

This one comes with tourist advice.

Thanks for finding the September 2013 geocache! Popular local attractions are the “Gardens” by Boyus and End Portal

Please leave your name below (brag if you did not need coordinates to find the cache) You can leave a calling card in the other chest.

Remember, when you're done, click “Done” and not “Sign”

First to find: D4veroche (9/1). Then SkyerCorp (9/2), HGLCraft (9/5), NightWorldSky (9/14), SWfan85 (9/16)

October 2013 — in the nether, 237, 70, 509

Thanks for being a part of the October 2013 geocache. There will be a prize drawing at the end of the month. By putting your name in this book, you are entered.

One last thing, feel free to brag a little if you found this without the coordinates.

First to find: SkyerCorp (Oct 2). Then D4veroche (6 Oct)

SWfan85's cache — 1294, 60, 1019

A second hider, with the same anxiety about the Sign button and rather more shouting about it.

Congratulations! You have found a TWiTCraft Geocache.

DO NOT CLICK SIGN! Signing the book will prevent others from adding their names. Please just click “Done” after adding your name to the log.

Thanks! -SWfan85

First to find: SkyerCorp. Also found by: spkarrer

The unsigned one — −738, 68, −1495

Two pages, no date, no month, no names underneath.

Congratulations! You've found my geocache! Please write your username on the following page.

People Who Found

Nobody ever did.

The same two names, every time

Across the five logbooks with signatures in them, twelve people signed. SkyerCorp is in five of them and first to find in three. D4veroche is in four and first to find in one, and the two of them were clearly racing.

The thing that has kept best is the tone. Every book worries about the same button, every book has a donation chest so the hider can tell who really came, and every book invites you to brag if you found it without the coordinates. Nobody was watching. They just did it properly.

Sources: six books recovered from the archived worlds, in the Library, and the chat logs from June to October 2013. Text is exact, including the spelling and the shouting. A seventh challenge was run by HGLCraft in January 2014 on the new map.
